People may notice that I haven’t been in the shop at all for the last few days.  That’s because I’m on an excursion in Barcelona.  I’ll be traveling through Spain in to France and Italy enjoying myself but also, and more importantly, researching new ideas to bring back for the shop!  I’ll be posting photos of some things I’ve found and hope to bring back to add to the Duchess repetoire.  So far Barcelona has been amazing!  Tremendous food and a fantastic flair for design and presentation.  Stay tuned!

Oh how exciting! I lived in Italy for three months once upon a time, and I still dream about a particular dessert, a laminated pastry filled with pastry cream, coated in dark chocolate and sprinkled with chopped pistachios…. ok, went off on a tangent there… can’t wait to see what you bring back to Duchess!

      Garner,

I don’t actually know you buy have been into Duchess many a time and believe you guys are the best thing to hit Edmonton in the last year. When in Spain last year I ate what I referred to as “the life-changing pastry.” It was found at a bakery in Bakio, on the Basque Coast north of Bilbao. The treat was called a Palmera, I think…and I think I may have seen them in other places in Spain, I just didn’t actually try one until Bakio. It is a rather large (and flat) heart-shaped pastry (the pastry was sort of like croissant-ish), then covered with chocolate. Some sort of delicious cream was the welcome surprise between the pastry and the chocolate. Delicious! Would love to get one at Duchess!
